On Sunday, November 4 at 4:00 PM in NC State’s Stewart Theater, Ralph Farris will perform the premiere of Donald Reid Womack’s new work Blue Ridge Seasons: A Bluegrass Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. with the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra. The piece, inspired by the natural beauty and musical heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the first ever bluegrass viola concerto, and written specifically for Farris.
Womack is a professor of composition and theory at the University of Hawaii. Particularly well-known for his work with Japanese, Korean and Chinese instruments, his catalog includes more than 90 compositions for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and voice.
Farris is a Juilliard-trained multi-instrumentalist, conductor, composer, arranger, and record producer. He is a founding member and Artistic Director of ETHEL, the genre-bending string quartet, and has performed in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, and as the leader of Roger Daltry’s band.
Dr. Peter Askim will conduct the piece in a program that includes Copland’s Appalachian Spring.
